--March 16th

We woke up this morning in the midst of a thick sea fog that had rolled in overnight. All the gear, including me and my bag, were pretty wet from the fog. I made some more french toast for everyone with the last of the sourdough.

This morning we were heading for San Juanico to the north. Just past the turnoff to San Juanico is the small village of La Purisima. I always wanted to check out this little town, so we drove into town. I thought they had a Pemex there, it said so on the map, but they didn’t, instead there was a small house that sold gas out of a drum. It was a premium price, but I wasn’t sure when we’d see gas again, so we topped off.

The road to San Jaunico was pretty washboarded, but not too bad. We arrived around lunchtime in San Juanico, also called Scorpion Bay. Interestingly, the last 10 miles into town was fresh nice pavement. Thinking back to the stretch of pavement between Cuidad Insurgentes and La Poza Grande, it was in such poor shape. I wonder why the money for roads gets spent on this random stretch while the rest of the road in is in such poor shape. Priorities in Mexico are hard to figure out sometimes.

Brian was in dire need of ice and we found out that a local gringo living there sold block ice. After getting the provisions we needed, ice and beer, we headed out to the Cantina to see about camping. I had heard about this place from their website.

We found a nice spot or camp overlooking the wide bay right where all the surfers liked to hang out. It was a little busy, but I enjoy people watching, so this camp spot was perfect.

The camping fee included cold showers and we all took one that afternoon to wash off the several days of grime that had built up. The mud at the mangroves was on all the gear and we were a mess. The showers were cold, but very refreshing. They had hot showers for 5 bucks each, but I was fine with cold.

Brian and I went out in the kayaks to have fun in the light surf and explore the bay to the south. There were several really nice sailboats anchored in the bay. Seems like this bay is a stop over for folks sailing south. There were also several large fishing vessels anchored in the bay.

Later in the afternoon we did some more kayaking, hiking, and exploring. We decided to have someone else cook so we had dinner at the Cantina. The food was good, I’d recommend them.

Another great day came to a close.
